Why is it mandatory to re-verify mobile numbers with Aadhaar?
The Central Government has made it compulsory to re-verify all mobile numbers using Aadhaar card of every user. This decision is taken after an order passed by the Supreme Court to verify all mobile phones with Aadhaar. As per the data provided by Telephone Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI), there were 1178.2 million wireless subscribers as on 31stOctober 2017. However, the number of active wireless subscribers stood to 1,025.79 million.
The number of mobile connections seems to be very high when compared with the population of India and keeping the fact in mind that not all people residing in India have a mobile connection. There is a high probability that a huge chunk of these active mobile subscribers have been registered through fake identity proofs. As per media reports, NIA also shared credible information that these fake numbers are being used for inciting violence and propagating terrorism in the country. Paying heed to these reports, the Supreme Court made it mandatory to re-verify all mobile numbers with Aadhaar.
